Many doctoral students contribute to their own failure through self-defeating behaviors, becoming their own worst enemy when they are writing their dissertation. Be aware of your own potential to sabotage your efforts due to either a fear of failure or success.

A few ways students defeat themselves is through negative self-talk such as, “This will take forever”, “I’ll never get it done”, and “I can’t do it.” Try these statements instead, “I’ll do something everyday”, “Steady progress is the answer” and “If blank can do it, so can I.”
