It is necessary to be thorough in your writing, but avoid being too compulsive. If you are too compulsive, you may have difficulties with the public aspect of the dissertation. You may value your privacy too much.

The dissertation process includes submitting your work and receiving critiques from the chairperson, dean, committee members, director of research, fellow students, and family and friends. During this rigorous process, students can often become defensive and argumentative to the point of becoming belligerent over their work. This is not helpful in completing the dissertation, and it will only set you back if you are unable to take criticism.
